Conan Exiles Age of Sorcery: How Sorcery Works

If you want to do magic in Conan Exiles, you can do that since the Age of Sorcery update, i.e. version 3.0. In our guide, we explain what you need, how to learn spells, and how to use them.

This is the sorcery: Conan the Barbarian’s magic finally comes into play with Age of Sorcery, the biggest update in over two years. However, it works differently than you know it from typical MMOs. You cannot throw a fireball at the push of a button, you must prepare your learned spells. Sometimes ritual sacrifices are also necessary or other resources that you as a sorcerer should carry with you. In our guide, you will find out what you have to do as a sorcerer’s apprentice.

How to start using magic in Conan Exiles

Your first step as a future wizard should be to seek out the NPC sorcerers scattered around the world. They usually stay alone or in pairs in various camps. We have already told you all the locations in the Exiled Lands in another guide. And this is what your plan should look like:

Find and eliminate the NPC sorcerers in Conan Exiles.
Collect their spell pages and satchels.
Open the satchel in your inventory and with a bit of luck, you will get a map.

Once you have received the map, you can go to the location on the map. This is a cave (Shaleback Hollow), which is only guarded by a few wild creatures. At the end of this cave, you will find an altar and a magic book. If you interact with this, you will learn your first two spells directly, you will receive your own magic book and a magic wand.

Now you can drag the wand into your quick slot bar and equip it. You can start with the magic with the attack button. You have to know that all spells are divided into different schools of magic. Once you start casting, runes will appear in front of you for you to target. If you choose one of them, it will continue and more runes will appear. The spell is only cast when the second rune is chosen. With more devastating spells, you sometimes have to choose more than 2 runes.

1 rune: choice of magic school

2 Rune: Choose the spell or sub-category for stronger spells
3 rune or up: choose a spell.

That sounds more complicated than it actually is. But once you get the hang of it, it takes less than 4 seconds to cast a spell, and the tooltips when targeting the runes also tell you what you’re actually doing.

Right from the start you have two spells at your disposal:

An ice bridge
uncover corruption

Doesn’t sound that exciting at first, but you can learn more spells!

How to learn new spells in Conan Exiles

When you interacted with the spell book in the cave, you also unlocked the recipe for the thaumaturgy table. Your magical workbench, so to speak, with which you can expand your magic book. To build this in your base using the construction hammer, you will need:

At this table, you can now expand your book. Place it on the table and select the expansion you want to craft from the menu on the right. In most cases, you will need spell pages, which you can find at the NPC sorcerers or in their vicinity. For stronger magic, you also need other resources, such as blood or souls. But even simple materials like rotten meat or stone can be needed.

As you continue to fill your book with spells, you will also learn new recipes using the Words of Power. With these Words of Power you will learn how to craft the Sacrificial Stone and the Circle of Power. You can offer blood sacrifices to get souls and blood or summon beasts, for which you then need the sacrificial blood.

If you place a sorcerer slave at your table, you can use failed sorcerous spell pages to craft the spell pages needed for upgrades. So don’t throw them away if you find them on other sorcerers.

That’s the cost of magic

Sorcery is now one of the strongest skills you can acquire in Conan Exiles. These don’t come without a price, however. For the smaller spells, you often need different types of bags, which you can loot from the satchels of NPC magicians. Larger spells increase your own corruption.

And even if you shed your corruption through dancers, as usual, you need a certain level of corruption for stronger spells. For the new players: You can recognize the corruption by your health and stamina bars. A purple area opens up in these, reducing your maximum stamina and life points. So you become a frailer but at the same time a powerful magician. Literally, a glass cannon.

You still have this bonus: With a higher corruption, you can now improve your attributes and thus unlock new bonuses. However, this causes your corruption to remain permanent the more you use it to improve your attributes. By the way, you can tell the degree of corruption of your character by looking at it.
