In the survival classic The Forest you have to survive after a plane crash on a deserted island. However, the absence of humans does not mean that there are no dangers lurking - on the contrary: In The Forest, you have to face many enemy mutants.
The island in The Forest is crisscrossed by a vast network of caves and offers plenty of habitat for mutants and cannibals, both above and below ground. If you're not careful and don't prepare yourself appropriately for the different enemy types, your chances of surviving decrease with every passing second.
In our guide, we have summarized all the mutants that exist in The Forest for you. We also show you what their strengths and weaknesses look like. Basically, in The Forest, you have to differentiate between different mutant types and mutant genera.
The classification of the mutant types is based on their behavior, their movement, and their abilities. The individual types can be found in almost all genera. You can find the following mutant types in The Forest:
Skinny Mutant Strains:
Skinny Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the skinny mutants:
The weakest and first mutants you will encounter on the island. They can be male or female and represent the fastest mutants in each tribe. They sometimes fight among themselves and eat the corpses of their comrades, which makes them vulnerable to attacks. Skinny mutants cannot set up totems.
Strains of female mutants:
Weapons of the female mutants:
Appearance of the female mutants:
Although the female mutants do not carry weapons, they are more aggressive than their male relatives. They also have long, claw-like fingernails that they can use to deal damage. Female mutants often interrupt a fight to mourn when they learn that another mutant has been killed nearby. Female mutants can set up totems.
Male Mutant Strains:
Male Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the male mutants:
No matter what species you encounter a male mutant in, his behavior pattern will always be nearly the same. They make up for their low movement speed with increased resilience and strength.
If they witness the death of a female mutant, it increases their aggressiveness. Depending on the genus, their armament differs. Masked and pale species even mostly fight with their hands only. Normal and painted male mutants often use weapons. Heavy and powerful weapons are most effective against male mutants. Male mutants can build totems.
Tribes of the Mutant Leaders:
Weapons of the Mutant Leaders:
Appearance of the Mutant Leaders:
You will usually never meet a leader alone. They always have a group of mutants of normal and painted species in tow. Then let them fight for you. Leaders themselves stay out of combat and just watch. If necessary, however, they will join the fight or call for reinforcements.
If you defeat the leader, his subordinates will flee. But they return after a short time to avenge their leader. Leaders can build totems.
Firethrowing Mutant Strains:
Weapons of the fire-throwing mutants:
Appearance of the fire-throwing mutants:
Fire-throwing mutants are the only ranged fighters. Extreme caution is required here. They hide behind other mutants and toss flaming tennis balls into battle. Although this often hits other mutants, be careful when attacking a fire-throwing mutant. You can set yourself on fire with a melee attack.
The classification of the mutant genera is based on their appearance, but also on their difficulty, listed in order of increasing difficulty. You can find the following mutant genera in The Forest:
Starving Mutant Types:
Starving Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the Starving Mutants:
The appearance and behavior of the starving mutants is usually the same as that of the skinny mutants, since starving mutants are always of the skinny mutant type.
Regular Mutant Types:
Regular Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the regular mutants:
Along with the starving mutants, the regular mutants are the island's largest breed of mutants. They come in a variety of forms. Males are often elaborately adorned with bone jewelry, war paint, and belts made from found materials, while females are left undecorated with what may be a simple loincloth.
Pale Mutant Types:
Pale Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the Pale Mutants:
These pale, bluish looking mutants are most commonly found in caves, but will also spawn on the surface a few days after initial contact. The pale mutants are stronger than normal mutants and they have no women, leaders or fire throwers in their ranks.
Painted Mutant Types:
Painted Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the Painted Mutants:
These mutants can be identified by the dozens of crosses on their bodies, usually painted in white paint. The crosses are easy to see on male mutants, unlike female mutants and bosses. Painted mutants are stronger than normal and pale mutants.
Types of Masked Mutants:
Masked Mutant Weapons:
Appearance of the Masked Mutants:
Masked mutants are the strongest on the island. You can easily recognize them by their masks, which they make out of corpse faces.
The mutants listed so far are mainly referred to as cannibals because they look like humans. In addition to them, there are the so-called "Scary Mutants", which are a lot more difficult to defeat. These are called mutants by players to differentiate them from the cannibals above. In The Forest you can encounter the following types of mutants:
Appearance and behavior of the Armsy:
An Armsy appears to have two to three bodies and is significantly larger than you or cannibals. It has six arms in total and only takes two to three hits to kill an unarmored player.
In theory, you can encounter up to four Armsies at once. However, that is very rare. Usually there are two or three of them at most.
Blue Armsy in The Forest:
In Cave 6, a special form of Armsy awaits you, the blue Armsy. He has more health and is 33 percent stronger than a regular Armsy. This mutant guards the keycard and camcorder along with half a dozen mutant babies.
Battle against the Armsy:
Cave Fighting: The best way to fight him (as against all creepy mutants, by the way) is with ranged attacks using Molotov cocktails or fire arrows. Otherwise, poisoning him with poison darts and then attacking him with a chainsaw has proven good practice. However, this method requires the Armsy to be alone and isolated. Otherwise you won't be able to block it with the chainsaw.
Surface combat: The chainsaw method is also recommended here. However, it is much more difficult to isolate an Armsy outside of a cave. When fighting an Armsy, you should not retreat into a tree house, otherwise the Armsy will start attacking the tree until it falls over.
Appearance and behavior of the Virginia:
Like the Armsy, the Virginia consists of two or three bodies that squirm and move against each other. It has six legs, claw-like feet, breasts, and six deformed arms, and can be found primarily in caves, but later also on the land. Because of their scurrying, you may be able to hear them before you see them. In contrast to an Armsy, however, it is very quiet.
Blue Virginia in The Forest:
In the large wet cave room near the modern bug location, you can find a blue-skinned Virginia. After 14 days they start spawning on the surface, but still remain rare appearances for the time being.
Fighting the Virginia:
Cave Fighting: In a cave you have the best chance of success against the Virginia. Tight spaces make combat difficult for her, as they do for you. The same applies here: you have the best chances with long-distance and fire attacks. A flashlight upgrade on your bow is also important so that you don't lose sight of the Virginia. With molotovs and fire arrows you can deal good and, above all, reliable damage from a distance.
Surface Combat: When fighting outdoors, don't underestimate the bounce of a Virginia. She can even jump onto the roofs of mutant huts, making it much harder to hit than in a cave. When choosing your weapons, however, the following also applies: fire and ranged attacks are the means of choice.
However, a Virginia is usually always accompanied by mutant babies and/or cannibals. You should defeat them first, otherwise they will surround you.
Appearance and behavior of the cowman:
Unlike Armsies and Virginias, the Cowman has a single body and features facial features. The cowman is obliquely reminiscent of a grotesquely obese human being or an early human fetus.
The cowman mostly attacks by charging at you and changing direction while running to hit you when you try to dodge. He will also try to just jump on you. He is also extremely fast and can explode dead mutant bodies and animals on impact when charging.
Battle against the cowman:
Cave Fighting: In a cave, the cowman has the advantage. It is very difficult to dodge his attacks in the cramped chambers. Basically, he's good at attacking from hidden cover, as he seems to have trouble spotting hidden opponents. Again, long-range fire attacks are the most effective weapon. The only better way is to face the cowman in a group and individually draw his attention while the others attack him with melee weapons.
Surface Combat: The Cowman is the rarest spooky mutant. Like Armsies and Virginias, they spawn on the surface after seven days. As soon as he spots you and follows you, you should flee towards the water. If you manage to escape into deep waters, the cowman will drown. But beware: Usually the cowman is faster than you!
Appearance and behavior of the mutant baby:
Mutant babies have one leg with a stump and only one normal arm, which is smaller and disfigured with claws. From day seven you will find them accompanied by Virginias. With their squeaks and smacking, wet noises they make as they drag themselves across the ground, you usually hear them before you see them. They are easily distracted, for example with torches or by other creatures.
Battle against the mutant baby:
The mutant babies lunge at you with their leg, making screeching noises. The attack deals high damage and you should definitely try to block it. Since they always appear in a group, they can quickly destroy your armor with their numerous attacks.
Once you've successfully dodged or blocked the attacks, explosions of any type are very effective as you send a multitude of them to the afterlife. When attacked with any weapon, the mutant baby falls on the first hit
The Worm in The Forest
Appearance and behavior of the worm:
The worm is part of the absolute endgame content in The Forest. He can only spawn on the island from day 40. It appears to be made up of over a dozen smaller creatures that develop their strength by possessing incredible hive spirit attack behavior.
Fight against the worm:
Fighting a worm is a big challenge. It can take many different forms, depending on how many creatures it is composed of. Once the little beasts have bonded, the worm moves across the entire terrain at lightning speed and can withstand strong attacks.
Should you manage to split the worm into several small enemies, they can quickly surround you, reducing your field of view and making the fight more difficult than before. It is important to prevent the small creatures from bonding with each other. It's best to attack the individual worm limbs from afar during the process. But pay attention to your surroundings and to small worm formations from the shot off limbs.
The easiest way to deal big damage against multiple creatures at once is with a hairspray can flamethrower. Once you've defeated enough of these worm parts, the worm has little chance of connecting.
Appearance and behavior of the girl:
The girl has a single worm as her host, which stays behind once you defeat her. It can only spawn after the end of the game and is almost identical to the final boss, but weaker than it.
Fighting the girl:
The girl has a variety of powerful attacks:
Basically, the flare gun is a very good weapon against the mutant girl. Once you've defeated it, don't wait too long to also defeat the worm that spawns after the fight.
