It can be that simple: Many of the players questioned are already veterans and know each other in Chernarus, Livonia and Co. They give the tip that you should just plunge into the unknown. It's best to memorize the streets and sights right away.

Others orient themselves in DayZ exclusively on the coast of Chernarus and the river in Livonia. Here you loot until the seams of the backpack burst, and then you go on an uncertain adventure.
Yet again others use real paper maps from DayZ and Arma 3, which you can buy in the shop of developer Bohemia Interactive. The free alternative, in this case, would be the IZurvive app. Here you download the maps you are playing on and set markings for tents, dealers, your position, and more.
