Since the release of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 almost 3 months ago, player numbers have plummeted. What does this mean for the game, and what does the community have to say about it? We will clarify these questions in this article.
What it’s about: After peaking in November, the player numbers of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 have dropped by almost 80 percent. This drop didn’t even last 3 months. We also tell you how the community deals with it and what fun ideas some content creators are coming up with.

Player Count of Warzone 2 has dropped sharply since Release – Is the End Near?
Modern Warfare 2 was released at the end of October 2022, and Warzone 2 had already peaked in November with almost 500,000 players on Steam, the numbers via the Battlenet launcher, as well as on consoles, are not publicly available. At the end of January 2023 and almost 3 months later, the whole thing doesn’t look so good anymore.
A quick look at MW 2’s Steam charts on SteamDB is enough to see that the game can reach a maximum of 100,000 simultaneous players a day – at least on Steam. This means that player numbers on Steam alone have plummeted by 80 percent.
Not even the Free Weekend in December could save the numbers. Instead, the numbers kept falling. Of course, 100,000 concurrent players is still an enormous number. However, that is a low number for Modern Warfare shortly after its release.
This is How the Warzone 2 Community reacts
The community is pissed off at the same time, but equally takes it with humor. That’s what this “informative” video by YouTuber ItsIlusion shows.
The comments also confirm that Warzone 2 is currently struggling with some problems. Indeed, the players are also noticing the consequences of the falling player numbers. Among the consequences are the following:
- Waiting over 5 minutes for a match.
- Walking around for a long time without meeting any players.
So you can see that the players are visibly annoyed, and rightly so.

How bad is the Warzone 2 player count?
The numbers have dropped so much in such a short time is quite unusual. However, Modern Warfare 2, including Warzone 2, is still one of the most-played games on Steam.
Currently (01/27/2023), around 82,000 people are playing Modern Warfare 2 on Steam, putting the game in 10th place among the most-played games on Valve’s platform. At least if you ignore the Wallpaper Engine since it’s not a game.
Rank 10 doesn’t sound too bad, considering the number of games. But considering that games like Goose Goose Duck (5th) or Team Fortress 2 (8th) are far ahead of Warzone 2, it still doesn’t look very good for MW 2.
What does that mean? The facts are that Modern Warfare 2 has lost around 400,000 players and thus 80 percent of the player base since its peak in November 2022, and the community is additionally annoyed by this. The consequences are long waiting times until a match starts and fewer players to meet.
How the whole thing will develop will become clear in the next few weeks because the next season is scheduled to start on February 15.
