The Gigantopithecus from ARK: Survival Evolved, is a very large ape that is similar to the orangutan. It is bipedal, territorial and herbivore. When tamed, it is excellent at providing you with fiber, as it collects it while wandering.
Find out everything you need to know about the territorial herbivore in our Gigantopithecus guide. But also how to catch him, tame him, feed him, and breed offspring too.
This is the Gigantopithecus in ARK: Survival Evolved
Appearance: The Gigantopithecus is a huge ape, in addition to its descent to the orangutan, it can also be quickly confused with a Yeti or Bigfoot. A Yeti variant has existed since patch 237 in the snow cave on the map The Island, but it cannot be tamed and is far more aggressive.
Wild: You will find the Gigantopithecus more isolated in the areas around the redwood. He prefers to just lie around and eat berries that he collects from the bushes. Since he is a herbivore, you don’t need to be afraid of him at first. However, if you get too close or even touch a Gigantopithecus, it will quickly become aggressive.
Tamed: Once you have tamed a Gigantopithecus, it offers you various benefits. It is used to obtain fibers, which it automatically collects while hiking. Also, he can throw you up on distant places or small cliffs. He is also very useful as a tank due to his high life points, and with his attacks, he can quickly destroy the armor of other players.
How to tame the Gigantopithecus in ARK
Because the Gigantopithecus is passively tamed, you don’t have to hunt or stun, in order to tame him. All you have to do is place his favorite food in the last slot of your quick bar and slowly approach the Gigantopithecus. Now you can gradually make him your friend with the “Feed” action. However, you should be careful that your new friend doesn’t accidentally run into you during the taming process, because if that happens, he’ll become aggressive, and you’ll have to flee his reach before you can try again. Not only will you lose your current taming progress if you attack back and don’t flee immediately.
The safe variant: You can also take a Gigantopithecus with an Argentavis, Wyvern, or Quetzal and drop it into a previously built trap. Ideally, you only use a very small trap the size of a foundation so that the Gigantopithecus can no longer move. This way you can feed him regularly from above via a ramp without running the risk of him changing direction and running towards you.
The advanced variant: If you are quite advanced in the game and have a helper at your side, there is another option. For this, only your helper has to fly a Quetzal and catch the Gigantopithecus. Then he flies as close to you as possible, and you can easily tame the Gigantopithecus as long as he is held by Quetzal. With this variant, he will sometimes lash out at you, but you can always keep feeding him, and you don’t have to flee from his reach.

How to breed the Gigantopithecus in ARK
This is how you prepare the breeding: If you have a male and female specimen, you build an enclosure that is large enough at best. Put both Gigantopithecus in the pen and set them to roam via the command menu. Alternatively, you can also switch directly to “Pair”, but then there must always be a player nearby, otherwise the pairing will stop due to the rendering.
The breeding interval of a Gigantopithecus is 18 to 48 hours.
After successful mating, if you play on default settings, the female Gigantopithecus will be pregnant for about 6-7 hours. After this time, you can welcome the little Gigantopithecus baby into the world. As a baby, it takes up another 8 hours of your attention, during which you have to keep putting food in its inventory. Pay attention to the embossing intervals every 8 hours to tickle the greatest potential out of the baby.
Once it gains juvenile status, it can feed on its own. The entire ripening period lasts about 3 days and 5 hours
