The griffin, a chimera of eagle and lion, is in ARK: Survival Evolved, one of the creatures that you can use your weapons on while mounted. This and its speed make it versatile for you. You can find him on Ragnarok, Lost Island, and Crystal Isles.
Find out everything you need to know about the flying creature in our Griffin guide. But also how to catch him, tame him, and what he likes to eat.
This is the Griffin in ARK: Survival Evolved
Appearance: The Griffin’s appearance is reminiscent of the Hippogriff from Harry Potter. He is a chimera – half lion, half eagle. The front part of its body is that of the eagle. The griffin has a beak, large wings, and two claws on its front legs. The rear part is that of the lion, with a tail and two hind legs with large paws for feet.
Griffins appear predominantly brown, but can also be found red, or with a white face and belly.
Wild: The Griffin is an aggressive contemporary that should not be underestimated due to its large attack range and its speed! As soon as it spots prey in the air, it pounces on its prey like a bird of prey that it partly is. Due to its high speed, it can kill almost any prey. However, like the Spinosaurus, it can be easily distracted and quickly changes its target when attacking.
Tamed: Once you’ve managed to tame this independent predator, you can ride it and use your weapons at the same time. This is useful in fights, dodging flightless dinosaurs, or taming other dinosaurs from the air.
How to tame the Griffin in ARK
How to hunt the griffin: The best way to hunt a griffin is to build a trap or cage. For this, you build a foundation, on which you get about seven stone archways. Leave a little space between the gates. In each of the two archways that form the beginning and the end, you place a gate. You can already close the gate that forms the end. You can use some panels as a roof.
When the cage is ready, grab a pterosaur, preferably the small and fast Pteranodon, and fly to the griffin you want to tame. Since Griffins are aggressive by nature, he will follow you. You then fly into the cage and out through one of the gaps in the side. If the griffin is in the cage, you immediately close the still-open gate.
From the outside, you can now shoot your tranquilizer darts through the gaps until he is knocked out.
How to tame him: Once he’s unconscious, put Exceptional Kibble in his inventory and feed it to him. If the Griffin is unlikely to wake up in between, you can also feed it Narcoberries or Narcotics to increase the stun level again.
How to ride the Griffin in ARK
You don’t need to craft a saddle to ride the Griffin. You can touch down immediately without a saddle. The Griffin offers another advantage here: You can ride him armed and use your weapons while you are riding. Perfect for hunting a Quetzal, for example.
